A Public Service Announcement - Leash Your Psycho Dog

This past weekend we went to Tahoe with some friends, and while hiking on a trail, I noticed a huge Clifford-sized wolf-mix Cujo dog come toward us. I said aloud to Jen, "Wow, that is a big dog."

This freak of the canis genus then decided our precious little mutt Raisin was a snack, biting and swinging him around like a rag doll. I was frozen for what seemed like an eternity. It was probably one of the most horrible things I have ever seen.

And heard. Raisin howled like he was about to die. Which was true. After carrying him down the trail, we took him to a local Truckee vet, who showed us X-rays that revealed Raisin had hernias in his abdomen, crotch, and back. He had to have surgery immediately. The owner of the attacking dog - who admitted his dog had a history of playing doggie death match - at first offered to pay, then balked at the price - $1400.

And I don't blame him. Dog owners, please take note: If your canine like to chomp other dogs, cats, or people, be responsible and keep him leashed or muzzled. It's easy and can save you an expense, and others - myself - a lot of pain and grief.

I'll admit I laughed when Jack Black kicked Ron Burgandy's dog off Coronado Bridge, but man, when it's your dog, you're in a glass case of emotion.

Poor little guy! Why people are so dumb, I do not know. This is a perfect example of how there are bad pet owners, not (really) bad pets. Dogs do as they are done to/socialized, as you said, they don't act out of sheer malice.
However PEOPLE (cough, Scott, cough) tend to re-act...so its a good thing he wasn't on hand, what with his knife carrying and all. Heh. We've got friends who had their 3-year old sons' face ripped up by a 'friends' dog who had a *HISTORY OF BITING.* He'll be having repeated facial surgeries until he's 18 or so. Idiots.

Geez. What a high price to pay for someone's stupidity.

Awwwwwww, poor Raisin. What a cutie, though! And good training, too: you got him to look towards the camera just by pointing. That's a good dog there. I love my doggies: Chloe the Deaf Dalmation. She's our Princess, but is rather naive and airheaded. Then there's the Queen: Rayna the Border Collie/Belgian Shepherd/something or other. A very sweet doggie, but it took her like a year from the time we adopted her to warm up to us. Now she's all lovey lovey. And then there's the newest addition: Keiren the Prince. A stray kitten we just picked up last week. Oh boy. The new and exciting world of litter boxes. Lovely. Yup, I love pets. Hope Raisin recuperates soon!

thanks for the kind words, yeah, it could have been a lot worse. we're just glad he's OK. the owner forked over $1400, which is quite a bit, but actually only half of the total cost. raisin gets his stitches and staples removed on friday.

Hey, I'm from Tahoe and was attacked by a dog as a kid. They have leash laws on both the Nevada and California sides, including trails. If the jackass doesn't offer to pay then sue. Oh, it looks like he paid for some of it.

I'm glad the little fella made it!
